The Ten Commandments

The ten Commandments were given by God to Moses on Mount Sinai as a holy standard for His people. While they provide a clear moral compass to us, Jesus later distilled these laws into two great commandments of love. The first one is to love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and the second is to love thy neighbour as thyself. In doing this, Jesus showed us that all the commandments are fulfilled in love.

The Law was never meant to be a burden, but a guide. The commandments were made to keep us on the right path with God, helping us stay in His holiness by revealing the difference between right and wrong. They act like a mirror, helping us see our own hearts clearly. When we look into that mirror, we see our deep need for mercy and forgiveness.

Ultimately, the Law serves to lead us to Christ. It shows us that we cannot save ourselves by our own strength. By revealing our weakness, we are pointed directly to Jesus, our Savior. God’s law is holy and good. Through Him, we receive not just a list of rules, but the grace and the power to live a life of true love and obedience.

The Ten Commandments are found in Exodus 20:3-17. Below is the order God gave and Jesus further distilled for us.

1. Thou shalt have no other gods before me.

2.Thou shalt not make unto thee any graven image, or any likeness of any thing that is in Heaven above, or that is in the Earth beneath…

3. Thou shalt not take the name of the Lord thy God in vain; for the Lord will not hold him guiltless that taketh His name in vain.

4. Remember the sabbath day, to keep it holy.

5. Honor thy father and thy mother: that thy days may be long upon the land which the Lord thy God giveth thee.

6. Thou shalt not kill.

7. Thou shalt not commit adultery.

8. Thou shalt not steal.

9. Thou shalt not bear false witness against thy neighbor.

10. Thou shalt not covet thy neighbor’s house, thou shalt not covet thy neighbor’s wife…nor any thing that is thy neighbor’s.
